New Coke
LEGO has stunningly validated the Orndoff Principle by changing at least four of their traditional colors, supposedly based on consumer research, focus groups, etc. Nevermind that these colors have been in use for years (over 20 years in the case of light gray). Fucking idiots.

I have been emailing and calling LEGO to bitch about this for the past few days, as well as arguing with other nerds on LUGNET, so you can see why I haven't had much time for blogging. On the bright side, this will free up a lot more money for non-LEGO expenditure.

The new gray on the right is atrocious!

Have they done research on how well the old/new colors hold up under sunlight, harsh use (dropping in toilets, burying in dirt, etc.), putting in orifices (yours truly had a 30 minute trip to the doctor at age 8 after getting a piece stuck in his nose), or battery acid?

Yeah, new grays have a blue/purplish tint. They look OK with each other, but with other colors, it's very ugly.

My theory on the change is that the new dyes are cheaper. LEGO has done a lot of cost-cutting lately - moving production out of Denmark, Switzerland, etc. into Eastern Europe. Even with the cost-cutting measures, they have still struggled to turn a profit the last 5 years, due to a lot of dumb non-brick tie-in products (video games and such), and ill-advised new themes like Galidor and Clikits.

That's a great LEGO story! I have a similar story, except I had a piece stuck in my ear. Also, I was 21.
